Kamilah “Kwoodz” Haywood is a Canadian fiction author of Jamaican heritage, an active artist, activist, and workshop facilitator whose work explores the unfiltered, authentic, and often dark side of Toronto life. With raw details and intimate narratives, Kamilah has written four novels—delving into topics such as female incarceration, sex trafficking, relationships, coming of age, and spirituality—with a new teen novel currently in progress.
A founding member of the Toronto Urban Book Expo's Board of Directors, Kamilah has facilitated over 15 workshops and co-founded a series of writing workshops and events in collaboration with Kya Publishing. These initiatives focus on cultural awareness, professional development, and international networking throughout the Black writing community and broader creative industries.
Their signature “Find Your Voice” workshop is currently featured in the Grand Valley Institution for Women, as part of a literature program supporting incarcerated women. Kamilah is a passionate advocate for justice, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Elizabeth Fry Society, which delivers gender-based, trauma-informed services for criminalized women and non-binary individuals.
Kamilah is also a current board member of the RittenHouse Board of Directors, an Advisory Council Member for the University of Carleton’s Prison Transparency Project, and part of the Canadian Coalition for Children with Incarcerated Parents through the University of Ottawa.
Beyond writing, Kamilah is equally devoted to music. As the founder of W.A.R. Productions, they have produced and directed 12 music videos, and released three EPs that raise awareness about social issues. They are a member of For the People By the People and Get it Dun Inc., using their voice and creativity to amplify community concerns through sound.
